Most panics turn out to be cat-shut-in-cupboard syndrome or he's just out on an extended hunting trip. If he doesn't appear, search the immediate area thoroughly - your own house, gardens, outbuildings, shed and barns etc and ask neighbours to do the same. Leave food out overnight in case he is too scared to come back during the day. Most importantly - never give up.

... the telephonists keep a log of all missing and found animals.

phone the council...
... both the City and County councils have cleansing departments and if your cat has been killed on the road, they might know.

contact all the vets ...
... in your area - not just your own vet.

ask your postman...
... milkman, newspaper boy, window cleaner and local school children if they have seen anything and to keep their eyes open.

local shops...
... and Post Offices will usually be happy to put a notice up in their window - include a photograph if you can.

make up a leaflet...
... with a description and circulate to everyone in your area. Some people believe you should offer a reward, others think this encourages unscrupulous folk to pick up someone elses cat and bring it to your door.

never give up looking...
... we often hear of cats reappearing after astonishing lengths of time away from home. If you have registered him missing with us and other charities, please let us all know if he returns.

when he returns...
... and has been missing for more than a day or two, it's a good idea to keep him indoors for a few days to resettle himself
